Ioan Slavici was an exceptional and renowned journalist, being the editor of the publication "Timpul" in Bucharest and, later, the founder of the "Tribuna din Sibiu". Following his articles, he was imprisoned five times, both in Austria-Hungary, as an alleged Romanian nationalist, and in Romania, as an alleged Austro-Hungarian spy. The writer passed away on August 17, 1925, at Crucea de Jos, Romania. His memoirs, published in the volume "Memories" (1924), have a special importance for the history of Romanian literature. Ioan Slavici's work is strongly influenced by the traditional world of the Transylvanian village. An excellent observer of the rural environment, Slavici creates in his short stories and studies a real fresco of morals, of people's behavior according to their social status. All this is given in the smallest detail, from outfits to speech and gestures.
